Eric Patton of Dent Express PDR, (Owner) started out years ago taking a one week class from a major PDR school in California. By the end of his training, he knew the trade was going to be very difficult if he had not had the determination and ambition to become the best he could. He practiced and practiced for hours after his full time job in his garage. Experience was the ultimate payoff that would help him become a master PDR tech in the future.

It seems by now that paintless dent removal (PDR) is by the far the most versatile and profitable service compared to all other auto recon services. Some other services like, bumper repair and mobile auto body repair have good higher ticket averages but with PDR you can get more done in less time. In most cases, PDR is performed within 30-60 minutes. Average cost is between $85-$150. Mobile bumper repair, 2-3 hours and average cost is $225-$275. But… there’s materials, health hazards, bigger vehicle, more gas and time are all factors. If one was to get into the automotive reconditioning industry, their first consideration would be to train in PDR. Now the downside is, PDR takes time to learn properly, not to mention the training is the utmost important. Dent Time PDR Training and Top Gun PDR Training are a couple of good one on one private clinics to learn from. One reason is to learn PDR is the low start up cost and no overhead and materials once you have your initial tools. Unless you loose your tools, you won’t really have to worry inventory. If you are a tool nut, then you might be spending some coin but it won’t because you have to. PDR seems to be the core of the automotive reconditioning industry. Once you offer the service, profits seem to sore with less outflow. Even if you don’t personally offer the service, you might consider hiring a sub-contractor or going to a recommended school. BEWARE! Don’t fall for those 1 week training courses. If you can’t afford 2-4 weeks, then don’t even go. Save your money and time and go when can. Paintless dent removal is becoming more and more popular than ever. Most PDR companies have added on other services and have become a real player in the all-in one automotive business. Veteran PDR techs developed a sense of need from the customers and in todays day in age, it’s all about services offered. Then again, the truth is how good are your services? Quality before volume. You master quality, you mastered your business.

Dent Time blog wrote: Finally after months of photos and tech sessions, we created a manual regarding our line board. This paintless dent repair (PDR) line board was created to help those who either struggle in the PDR industry, newbies, and veteran techs who just simply want to learn more about the reflection.
This manual can also be purchased at PDRCoach.com. (An online store for pdr videos, tips n tricks.)
As the PDR trade gets bigger, the demand for information also gets bigger. From videos, tools and manuals, you’ll find it now on the web. This particular training product is more geared for introduction about how the line reflection is used with paintless dent repair. More chapters will be added for the “advanced pdr tips n tricks” in the near future. These future articles will include, deep creases, extreme big dents, glue pulling and more.
Video Presentation now available.

AutoLecture.com offers the unique line board used for paintless dent repair and door ding removal. The special board uses 1/4″ straight lines that reflect a curvature pattern across the dent. The more you turn the board outward, the more detail is shows. Veteran PDR techs who use fog, also can use this board to crosscheck their work and get different perspectives.
Even at that, the line board offers an additional tool for any current PDR tech, new or veteran. It’s made from a high gloss plexy glass with detailed beveled edges. this board reflects well even on a white car on a sunny day. Although it is always to best to use a shade board for additional contrast when working on light cars. Here’s a demo video.

Back in the early days of auto reconditioning everyone was operating separately. Nobody interacted with each other. Some still do but why? More and more divisions are combining their services to work hand and hand with each other. If you notice, there seems to be a need for the other at one point or another. If it’s not PDR, it’s bumper repair. If it’s not bumper repair, it’s a panel spot repair, wheel repair and so on and so on.
Networking seems to be the new thing. PDR companies either use or have their own paint guy and vise versa with the mobile paint n body. Actually, the mobile paint n body guys love working with PDR guys. It cuts down the repair time by 1-2 hours in some cases. In benefit, less or no filler is needed, which leads to a better repair. Everyone wins. Customer and technician.
We always say, work smarter, not harder. Our opinion, we think the future of auto reconditioning is about groups of companies either networking tightly or joining forces to work together as a team. The results are usually fantastic but it all depends on professionalism. On-time, dependable and quality is a must.
As you see in the video, a PDR tech is used to help level the dent without using a lot of filler. In most cases, little or no filler is used at all. This seems to be a very good selling point to the customer who may have a concern. It also shows that a company is going the extra mile to help retain the appearance of their vehicle as well.
A pair of professionals from Orange County, California -Vince from DentsNoMore.com and Rick from MobilePaint.net were the team who worked hand n hand.

Line Board gets a manual created for new beginner and advanced PDR techs. It appears there is a demand for learning new ways to read a dent. Here is an article written on our other blog about the paintless dent repair manual
This PDR Line Board manual will seem to help the average PDR tech fine tune his/her finishing techniques. It’s not just about the lines though. There are techniques for vision and sight, stances, being efficient with minimal tools, knocking down procedures, crowns and much more. We also forgot to mention, the PDR manual has fantastic diagrams with very understandable step by step sequences. Expect to see this on the market late October from AutoLecture.com
